Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 20, 2026

Your child's learning is the most private data there is. This page explains, in plain language, what we hold, what we do with it, and the lines we will not cross.

Our founding rule. A child's records, captures, and photos are yours. We never sell them, never share them with schools or authorities, never use them as demo content, and never send them to an outside AI or use them to train any AI. This is built into how the product works, not just written here.

Unschooling Academy is operated by Lionheart Collective Inc. ("we", "us"), a British Columbia company. This policy covers the Unschooling Academy website and app (the "Service"). If you have any question about it, email admin@unschoolingacademy.org.

Who uses the Service

Unschooling Academy is a tool for parents and guardians to keep a private record of their own child's learning. Children do not create accounts and do not interact with us directly. As the account holder, you control your child's information and provide any consent on their behalf.

What we collect

We ask for as little as possible, and only what the Service needs to work for you.

How we use it

We use your information for one purpose: to provide the Service to you about your own child: to store your captures, map them to learning outcomes, show you the picture, and generate the records and reports you ask for. That is all. We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell it.

Voice capture

If you use voice to capture a moment, transcription is handled by your device's own dictation. Depending on your device and settings, that feature may send the audio to Apple or Google to convert speech to text. Fully on-device transcription is a planned upgrade. You can always type instead.

The recording is kept, and it is yours. We save the audio alongside the words so that you can play the moment back later and hear your child say it, rather than only reading a transcript of it. It is stored on your account for that one purpose. We do not listen to it, we do not use it to train anything, and we do not share it. Delete the moment and the recording is deleted with it, and the same is true if you delete the child or close your account, and it is enforced in the code rather than promised in a policy. Your export includes the audio, so you can take it and keep your own copy at any time.

Nothing is recorded unless you press the microphone. If you would rather no recording existed at all, use Type it instead and none is made. The Voice transcription switch in Settings is a separate thing: it decides whether your device turns the recording into text, not whether the recording is kept. With it off, a voice note is saved as audio only and you tag it by hand.

The "Ask" chat, and the matcher that reads a captured moment

Two things inside the app read what you write, and both run entirely on our own Cloudflare infrastructure — never an outside AI, never used to train any model, and never retained beyond generating that one answer or match. The optional "Ask" chat answers general curriculum and how-to questions; it sees only the general curriculum, this app's help text, and the question you type, and it never receives your child's records, captures, photos, history, or progress. The matcher that reads a moment you capture and works out which curriculum skill it is evidence of also runs on our own infrastructure, and it only ever sees that one note, the child's age, and the candidate topic list — never anything else in your child's record. Neither is ever sold, shared with a third party, or used to train any AI model.

Who can see your data

We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under US state privacy laws.

Aggregate statistics

We may publish aggregate, de-identified numbers about how well the Service works (for example, how many families keep a record), with small groups suppressed so that no individual child or family can be identified. This never includes personal information.

Where your data lives, and security

Your data is stored on Cloudflare infrastructure. Passwords are stored only as secure hashes, access is controlled by your login, and each child's record is walled off to the account holder and the people they have invited.

Your rights and control

Keeping your data

We keep your information while your account is active. When you delete a child or your account, it is removed from our live database immediately, and from backups within 30 days. If your account sits unused for 24 months, we will prompt you before doing anything; if you don't respond within a further 6 months, we delete it. These numbers are not arbitrary: 30 days is the technical limit of how far back our backup system can even reach, so we are not promising anything we couldn't keep.

If someone demands your data

Your data is stored on Cloudflare, a US-headquartered infrastructure provider, so it can in principle be reached by US legal process as well as Canadian. Two things limit what that means in practice. First, Cloudflare's own policy is to notify the customer (us) before producing anything, unless a court specifically forbids that. Second, and more importantly: we hold very little to begin with. No financial account numbers, no government ID numbers. There is little of consequence to hand over even under a valid order. If we are ever required by law to disclose your family's information, and we are not legally barred from telling you, we will.

If we ever have a data breach affecting your account, we will tell you directly, in plain language, what happened and what we did about it. We will not just post a notice and hope you find it.

Children's privacy

The Service is used by parents and guardians, not by children. We do not knowingly collect information directly from a child. Because you are recording information about your own child, you are responsible for the content you enter, and you consent on your child's behalf. If you believe a child's information has been provided to us improperly, contact us and we will address it.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we handle your data, we will update this page and the date at the top. Material changes will be communicated in the app or by email.
