Homeschooling in Utah

What Utah actually asks of a family teaching their own children. Written plainly, and honest where the answer is that nobody asks for anything.

United StatesFiling required

Who is in charge

Local school board / district of residence

Who actually reviews your child

No one routinely. A filed notice (where still required) excuses the child from curriculum, testing and instruction-time requirements.

What you must file

One-time notification to the local school district

Once, to the district of residence. USBE (live 2026-08-19): notice is only required once for each child. H.B. 209 (2025) removes the affidavit when homeschooling begins at the start of an academic year.

Goes to: Resident school district

NOTARIZATION WAS REMOVED by SB 56 (2024), effective 1 May 2024. H.B. 209 (2025) then removed the affidavit itself for students who begin at the start of an academic year. USBE still says the parent must notify the district once. Mid-year remaining affidavit triggers were not re-read end-to-end from § 53G-6-204 on 2026-08-19, confirm that section before advising a mid-year start. Old USBE FAQ PDF 404.

The part the paperwork does not cover

Filing on time is the easy half. The harder half is the year in between: showing what your child actually learned, in words the reviewer recognises, without turning your home into a school.

That is what this app is for. You say what your child did, in a sentence. It maps that to the real curriculum for Utah and builds the record you can hand over the day someone asks. See how it works.

H.B. 209 exact remaining affidavit trigger for a mid-year start was not extracted from § 53G-6-204 HTML on 2026-08-19 (navigation-heavy). Start-of-year: no affidavit. Notice to the district: still once, per USBE.
